Intern, Planning
Fashion Center Business Improvement District

The Organization
The Fashion Center Business Improvement District (BID) (www.fashioncenter.com), a not-for-profit corporation, was established in 1993 to improve the quality of life and economic vitality of Manhattan’s Fashion District. Through programs in the areas of streetscape improvements, sanitation and public safety services, marketing and promotions, economic development, and community service, efforts are aimed at promoting the district as a strategic midtown business location and ensuring New York's position as the fashion capital of the world.

The Position
The Fashion Center seeks a Planning & Development Intern to survey and report on a wide array of physical conditions and infrastructure elements in an effort to maintain and improve the urban landscape within the confines of the BID’s boundaries. You will help manage our Block-by-Block program by inspecting the streetscape in the district and reporting back with conditions that need to be fixed, along with ideas for improvement of the city. A significant portion of your time will be spent outside surveying the areas we administer and you will rely on your familiarity with ArcGIS to keep all the BID’s data up to date. You will be asked to produce maps and other visuals, and report statistics accurately.

The Planning & Development Intern may also occasionally be involved in planning and capital projects, economic development initiatives, marketing programs and business to business services, as well special projects and events. In addition to developing your data collection and mapmaking skills, this is a great opportunity to learn about the workings of a midtown Manhattan business improvement district and to make valuable contacts.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be:

  • Passionate about improving physical conditions in the urban environment
  • A graduate student in urban or regional planning, geography, urban design, statistics, public administration, or related field. (Undergraduate students and recent graduates with the appropriate qualifications and experience may also be considered.)
  • Motivated, reliable, and highly organized, showing great attention to detail
  • Familiar with ArcGIS, PhotoShop, Illustrator and PowerPoint
  • Professional and responsible with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including but not limited to property owners, building supers, maintenance staff, and city officials

Good health and positive attitude are also essential - this internship requires many hours out in the field, sometimes in inclement weather.

Schedule
This is a part-time position with somewhat flexible hours, though we are looking for an intern who will commit 16-20 hours per week for the duration of the school year. You will be expected to fulfill the majority of your hours Monday-Friday, between 9am and 5pm. You may occasionally be asked to conduct a night or weekend survey.

Salary
$15 per hour

We are looking to fill this position immediately. Interested applicants should send resume and letter of interest to Ms. Leigh A. Harvey - lharvey@fashioncenter.com
